A general-purpose pad has to be held or strapped awkwardly around a knee, and it tends to slide. The YD005 solves that specific problem: it is shaped for the joint and stays where you put it. That is the entire argument for it, and it is a good one — the device you actually use every day beats the more powerful one you do not.

Yes. It is shaped and strapped for the knee, but the same wrap works on an elbow, ankle or forearm.
How many of the 50 LEDs are near-infrared?
Ten. RedDot documents the split as 40 × 660nm red and 10 × 850nm near-infrared — a 4:1, red-weighted spectrum.
Why does it look like only some LEDs turn on?
850nm near-infrared is invisible to the human eye. The 10 near-infrared emitters are working; you simply cannot see them.
