One-Person Sauna Guide: Size, Power and Where It Fits
Short answer: a one-person sauna is a compact cabin, usually infrared, sized for a single seated user. Three things decide whether one will work in your home: the cabin's exterior dimensions against the space and the route to it, the electrical supply the manufacturer specifies, and whether the model is rated for where you plan to put it. Check all three on the exact model before you order. You can compare cabin sizes in our infrared sauna collection.
What "one-person" means on a sauna listing
Capacity is a manufacturer's rating, not a standard unit. Two cabins sold for one person can differ in width, bench depth and height. Some compact cabins are rated for a range. The Dynamic Gracia in our range, for example, is rated by its manufacturer for one to two people and is 39 inches wide. Read it as a roomy cabin for one or a close fit for two.
The useful number is the interior, not the label. Our guide to what "2-person" really means in a sauna shows how little interior width can separate one capacity tier from the next.
Size: measure the cabin, the route and the working room
A one-person cabin has a small footprint, but it is still a tall, rigid box that arrives in flat panels. Measure three things.
- The finished footprint and height. The Gracia's manufacturer-listed dimensions are 39 inches wide, 36 inches deep and 75 inches high. Compare the height with your ceiling, including any soffit, beam or light fitting.
- The delivery route. Panels have to pass every doorway, stair and turn between the curb and the room. The Gracia ships in two cartons by freight, delivered to the curb.
- Assembly space. Panels are stood up and joined in place. Allow room to work around the cabin, not just the space it will occupy when finished. A second adult makes assembly much easier.
Also check which way the door opens and what it swings into.
Power: read the manufacturer's electrical line first
Some compact infrared cabins are specified for ordinary household voltage. That is a per-model fact, so read it rather than assume it.
| Example in our range | Rated capacity | Electrical service listed | Rated power listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dynamic Gracia | 1 to 2 people | 120V / 15A | 1,600 watts |
| Dynamic Lugano | 3 people | 120V / 20A, dedicated breaker and outlet | 2,200 watts |
Figures are from the manufacturer documentation reflected on each Wellari product page. For the Gracia, Dynamic also specifies a dedicated breaker and outlet. Ask a licensed electrician to confirm that the circuit at your chosen location meets the manufacturer's requirement and the electrical code adopted where you live. In the United States that code is based on NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code. Our home sauna electrical guide explains what to hand the electrician.
Placement: where a one-person cabin can go
Start with the model's rating. The Gracia is listed for indoor use only, so a covered porch or an unheated outbuilding is not a substitute for a room inside the house. For an indoor cabin, look for:
- a level, dry floor;
- an outlet on a suitable circuit within reach of the cabin's own cord, as the manual specifies;
- the clearance from walls and ceiling that the manual requires;
- a room you can reach with the cartons.
A spare bedroom, home gym or finished basement can all work. The room matters less than those four checks. Our infrared sauna setup checklist walks through them in order.
One-person sauna checklist
- Manufacturer's rated capacity and the interior width and bench depth.
- Exterior width, depth and height, compared with your floor space and ceiling.
- Number of cartons, delivery method and the route into the room.
- Voltage, amperage and whether a dedicated circuit is specified.
- Indoor, outdoor or indoor/outdoor rating.
- Clearances and assembly instructions in the manual.
- Whether a safety listing mark is claimed, and by which laboratory. Listings by Intertek can be searched in its product directories.
When a one-person sauna is the wrong choice
If two people will regularly use the cabin together, buy for two. If you want to lie down, a one-person bench will not allow it. If the only available spot is outdoors, look at models the manufacturer documents for outdoor use instead.
Frequently asked questions
How much space does a one-person sauna need?
It depends on the model. As one example, the Dynamic Gracia is listed at 39 inches wide by 36 inches deep by 75 inches high. Add the clearance the manual requires and room to assemble the panels.
Does a one-person infrared sauna need a special outlet?
Some compact cabins are specified for 120V household service, but the amperage and whether the circuit must be dedicated vary by model. Read the manufacturer's electrical requirement and have an electrician confirm the circuit.
Can a one-person sauna go in an apartment?
Check the cabin's dimensions, the delivery route and the electrical requirement, then check your lease or building rules. A cabin listed for indoor use and household voltage may suit an apartment, but the building decides whether it is allowed.
Can I put a one-person sauna outside?
Only if the manufacturer rates that model for outdoor use. A cabin listed as indoor only should stay indoors.
